Trip home stirs Bryant’s nostalgia

Read this article......http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slug=aw-bryanthighschool121610
..........“Every single one, it seemed – the 8-year-old, the 9-year-olds – go left and they go right,” Bryant told Yahoo! Sports recently. “The older ones shoot the jump hook with the left, and they shoot the jump hook with the right. You’ve got bigger kids who can shoot from the outside, who can handle the ball and play. A lot of young players that look like [Pau] Gasol, who are just so skilled.  “And now, you’ve got kids here in the States, 20 years old, who can’t do those things.........................

DeShawn Stevenson gets it!  Do you?  What is it?  Wanna improve my shooting %, make more shots, keep shooting streaks longer?  Get a shooting coach!  Not just any coach, but a Shooting Coach.  One that specializes in shooting development with proven results.  It even helps if he/she was a good shooter or was trained by a good shooting coach themselves.  Check out this awesome article.

College Basketball Shooting Drills

Here's an old shooting drill from one of my basketball mentors John Wooden. It's basic but plays an important role in building your shooting foundation.  Remember this saying, "Don't despise the day of small beginnings." - AP (your shooting coach)

Imaginary Shooting DrillJohn Wooden, the legendary former basketball coach at UCLA, recommends performing the imaginary shooting drill to build power and stamina in your legs and to work on your shooting technique. You don't use a ball for the drill, so you can focus exclusively on your body mechanics without having to worry about making each shot. Stand with your toes on a line in your shooting position. When a coach or partner blows a whistle, take a perfect jump shot as if you actually have a ball. Move back to the line as quickly as possible and reset. Repeat on the next whistle. You can perform this drill on your own if necessary.

Click the link below to read the entire article. I agree with some but not all the mechanics mentioned here. : http://www.livestrong.com/article/326771-college-basketball-shooting-drills/

Free Throw Shooting Tips

2 C's and 3 R's
Adapted from Hal Wissell FT shooting video - http://www.coachwissel.com/

Confidence – Believe it’s going in. Think positive thoughts. Look and act like a shooter.
Concentration – eliminate all distractions and focus on target right above front of rim. This last thing you do before you shoot.
Routine – Helps confidence. Find nail hole & set shooting foot to right of hole or right behind it to get lined up Find the valve or seam below valve. Take desired # of dribbles.
Relaxation – Take deep breath
Rhythm – Down up action with the legs. One Motion, use Up force, catch Momentum wave. Shoot on way up with full extension.

Notes: Stay off the FT line until ref hands you ball. Say positive words to yourself with full confidence. Ex. I’m a shooter, nothing but net, count these, I’ve dreamt about making shots like these, this is me, I’m king, etc.

Correcting Basketball Shooting Errors

Check out this great video from Hal Wissel.  It's 8 minutes long so if you don't have time for all 8 minutes then look at the first 4 min. then the second 4 min later.  The only advice i'd offer these shooters is to "open" their stances a little to help align their body and the ball.  See video here: http://vimeo.com/8262062 and sign up HERE for the free basketball newsletter with lots of free videos.

I'm searching the web each week for the best videos on Shooting Development so stay tuned......AP

Me Shooting 30 years ago

This is me shooting at age 3. Look at that form! :)
I've always enjoyed
playing basketball
and consider it a
blessing that some
truly great shooting
minds have passed
down their gift of
shooting wisdom to me.
My goal is to share that
gift with as many aspiring
basketball players as possible.

All the best,
